A mattress overlay is “The perfect choice for significantly softening your existing mattress and reducing pressure on painful joints and aching muscles.”

Is your mattress too hard?    Can’t sleep because of a sore back, hip or shoulder?

Mattress overlays (toppers, pillowtops) are used to change the softness, thermal qualities, or contourability of a mattress. There are pros and cons to each type of overlay.

Traditional eggshell foam overlays

Made of traditional resilient polyurethane foam. Can have a flat, convoluted, or perforated surface.

  • Pros: Distributes pressure and reduces pressure points. Those with a smooth surface reduce pressure points better than those with an eggcrate surface. However, the eggcrate style is more popular as it can decrease moisture and heat buildup by allowing air to circulate through the convoluted surface.
  • Cons: Not resilient enough to have much impact on spinal alignment. Not very durable. Need to be replaced every 2 – 3 years

Memory foam overlays

Memory foam, also known as visco-elastic or Tempur foam, often come with a smooth surface.

  • Pros: Offers superior contourability and reduces pressure points. Sleeps warm, which you may or may not like.
  • Cons: Not resilient enough to have much impact on spinal alignment. Tend to feel a bit warmer than standard foams, which you may or may not like.  Need to be replaced every 2 – 5 years depending on brand.

Gel Infused Memory foam overlays

Gel infused memory foam is made of gel beads that are infused into the memory foam which creates an open cell structure that promotes air movement.

  • Pros: Offers superior contourability and reduces pressure points. The heat from your body dissipates instead of collecting in your mattress or overlay/topper.
  • Cons: Not resilient enough to have much impact on spinal alignment. Tend to feel a bit warmer than standard foams, which you may or may not like. Need to be replaced every 2 – 5 years depending on brand.

Latex overlays

Latex mattress overlay can have perforations to improve breathability and ventilation. They are usually flat.

  • Pros: Offers superior contourability and reduces pressure points. Sleeps warm, which you may or may not like. Durable
  • Cons: Sleeps warm, which you may or may not like. May not be resilient enough to have much impact on spinal alignment.
