  General Office chairs are available in a variety of designs and are value for money. They offer varied functionality but no dynamic movement or back support adjustability in the back. They have limited, low or basic functionality and generally are not recommended for long periods of sitting. Refer to Dynamic or Posture Guidance Seating for chairs with a higher level of support and functionality. General Office Chairs are what most people look at when making a purchasing decision on a chair. The different types of General Office Chairs are based on the functionality that the chair mechanism offers. A basic mechanism on a General Office Chair is an entry level chair mechanism and has limited functionality. It is therefore not recommended for long periods of sitting.
  Having a higher level of chair mechanism functionality on a General Office Chair will allow a user to sit for longer periods of time. It however does not offer the level of support and increased recommended sitting times offered by Dynamic and Posture Guidance Chairs.

  Footrests have been wrongly thought of as necessary for only short people to assist them to get to the right height for sitting. In fact its role is far more important. With today’s modern synchronised action chairs, a footrest helps to put a person into the ideal seated position of past 90 degrees to assist with reducing pressure in the back. The footrest helps as a leverage to assist the person sitting back. - Keyboard Systems
  There are a variety of alternatives to the traditional keyboard from models that split the keys into two halves to voice recognition software. Keyboard Systems can change a work surface easily from one that is used for computing to a clear surface for performing other tasks. Great where you have limited desk space. Split keyboards are what people most commonly think of when they hear the term “ergonomic keyboard”. These keyboards divide the letter keys into two halves, and angle each half slightly outwards. The premise is that this is a more natural position for your wrists and forearms (pointing inward, without requiring your elbows to come in as far) thus better conforming to the contours of your body – especially for people with broad chests. Adjustable-angle split keyboards are similar to fixed-angle, with the advantage that the angle between the two halves can be changed and sometimes the two halves can be physically separated. This allows you to position each half wherever your wrists most naturally rest – or place each half on specially-designed trays attached to each arm rest. (Some people even arrange them vertically, and position their wrists as if shaking someone’s hand.). Split-angle designs often also allow you to change the slope (tent) of the keyboard Contoured keyboards are sculpted to fit the hand; they place the keys in recessed curves that more closely match the natural position of the fingers. This reduces the distance your fingers have to travel when striking keys. These keyboards don’t feature quite the same layout as traditional keyboards – some keys are rearranged to be operated by the thumb, since it’s stronger than the other fingers. - Monitor Arms
  Monitor arms, also called “swivel arms” or “swing arms,” provide an adjustable arm attached to a platform on which you place your monitor. This allows you to easily position the monitor at the proper focal distance and viewing height. - Anti Gravity Recliners
  The zero-gravity technology is credited to the scientists and doctors at NASA and was utilized in the space program to reduce the amount of compressional forces exerted on the spine by the extreme speed at which the astronauts blast into space. During take-off, astronauts recline with their feet higher than their hearts with a torso to leg angle of 126 degrees +/- 7. The reason zero-gravity is a preferred posture for astronauts is any slight amount of disc compression will be exemplified by the speed and force of take off. - Back Inserts
  Inserts are commonly used when it is not always possible to change the seat one is sitting on such as in cars or when sitting on an aircraft seat. There are a multitude of different types of Seat inserts available. The principle behind inserts is that they should offer you the following:
  
  Total Back Support. This is necessary as the main muscles in the back that hold it in any position are the two broad bands beside the spine. To get adequate comfort and relief from back pain, they must be kept in as relaxed a position as possible. This is only possible with providing total spinal support. The humble lumbar roll is great when utilized in the acute stages of back pain to reinforce your positioning but is not recommended to provide long term comfort.
  
  A means of adjustment so that as your condition or comfort level changes either with a change of seating or your condition, there is some means to make changes.
  
  It must have adequate lumbar support and be set at a backrest inclination of greater than 90 degrees
  
  Having provided these three basic points, the choice of a back support is determined by your comfort level. You will instinctively know if the support you choose provides you with the right level of comfort and support. Do not try to find a support that keeps pushing you in the small of your back all the time. You will shortly learn that this can be uncomfortable and the best combination is one where you have support throughout your back.

- Support Belts
  There are many reasons for using Back Supports ranging from work or changed conditions such as an injury or pregnancy. There are also numerous studies that have been done on whether back supports are of any value. In summary, back supports are valuable for the following reasons:
  
  They give you immediate feedback by poking into you and making you feel uncomfortable if you are not bending correctly whilst using it. This feedback is extremely important particularly with people using back supports whilst working or after an injury.
  
  They help to increase the intra abdominal pressure that reduces injuries when lifting or carrying objects.
  
  Whilst back supports in some cases replicate the muscles of the back, they are not a substitute for the muscles and should not be worn for those reasons. In addition, there are no studies showing that the use of back supports reduces the strength of muscles or makes them “lazy”. If you have been provided this information, it is false and misleading. The two most important things that need to be kept in mind whilst using a back support is that it should be used correctly and and that correct lifting and bending techniques should be used at the same time. Only by observing and practising these two steps, can back supports be an effective device and supplement your recovery or assist whilst doing lifting. You should not attempt using a back support to do heavy lifting that could cause a back injury. This article has been edited by a Qualified Orthotist.
